MLB Defensive Specialist Doug Bernier shows you how to

Master Elite Fielding Fundamentals

From anywhere in the world (with just 20 minutes per day)

If Your Player Is Still Struggling in the Field, It’s Not From Lack of Effort

You’ve seen it — they’re working hard. They want to be better.

But instead of looking smooth and confident, they’re fighting the ball.

Footwork feels clunky. Throws feel rushed. Confidence dips.

The truth? Most players (and even coaches) focus on the wrong things — like endless glove drills — while ignoring the root cause of defensive consistency.

Until that’s fixed…

⚠️ They’ll keep getting bad hops they can’t handle

⚠️ They’ll keep looking hesitant on game day

⚠️ And their confidence will keep taking hits

How do I know?

Because I’ve been there.

A True Story that Could Change EVERYTHING for your YOUR infielder.

Hi, I'm Doug Bernier

Hi, I’m Doug Bernier, former Major League infielder & current Major League coach.

Maybe like your young player, I had dreams of playing in the Major Leagues.

(I wanted it from the time I was 10 years old)

But...

...whenever I talked about it, I got the SAME LOOKS as my daughter, when she tells everyone she wants to be a Mermaid when she grows up.

Usually I'd get some really condescending response, like,

"Isn't that adorable. Keep dreaming big, Doug."

The reason people laughed?

For starters, my Dad was 5'10" engineer, so you could say I was on the small side.

I DID have...

"Good" throwing velocity

"Good" running speed

"Good" hitting

And THAT was the problem...

...because next to all the other "good" players, I didn't stand out.

I didn't have anything about me that would genuinely catch the eye of a college recruiter or MLB scout.

I wasn't the strongest, the tallest, or the fastest.

This might seem weird to say, but after 20 years in pro ball, I've come to know that this is a make-it or break-it distinction

To elite teams and college recruiters, I was JUST "good."

Boring. Not worth their notice.

I was flying "under the radar"

Just a face in an ocean of faces.

I certainly wasn't showcasing my athleticism in a way that would make coaches or scouts take notice.

Here's the bottom line...

I was COMPLETELY unaware that I was setting myself up for failure...

Fortunately...

and the reason I'm here right now talking to you,

...is because I found my "ONE THING" that DID make me stand out (and made coaches want me) in defense.

And that changed EVERYTHING... from high school......to college...to pro.

Once I learned the real Art of Defense, it boosted my confidence...

AND opened doors for my future in baseball

Walt Weiss, Major League Manager, Colorado Rockies

“In 2005, Rockies' Walt Weiss hailed Bernier as the best defensive player in the organization.”

But let me be very clear about something...

I was NOT a natural, or a defensive “genius,” or anything close to it.

Not at all. In fact...

For a long time, I struggled with my defense.

I wan't terrible.

Thanks to natural athleticism, I often played middle infield (in addition to pitching). However...

I first noticed the problem...

As I neared the end of high school and reached out to universities, I noticed a distinct lack of enthusiasm from college recruiters.

As in Zero. Zip. Crickets.

And I really had no idea WHY nobody wanted me, until a VERY eye-opening experience my Junior year of high school - when I tried out for the Area Code games as a pitcher.

This was were I realized...

...even though I was one of the best pitchers on my High School team (which was the first HS team in the history of California to go undefeated)

...and even though I was a crafty pitcher, who could locate well and get guys out

It wasn't enough.

I was NOT a 6'3" leftie throwing 95 mph+ And so, they weren't interested.

I was cut the first day.

That embarrassing, devastating day opened my eyes like nothing else could have. If I wanted to play at the next level, it couldn't be as a pitcher.

But even after years of working on my defense with instructors and coaches, I was still just an average defender.

This was after putting in hours and hours of fielding practice... and it didn’t seem to be helping at all.

I was starting to lose hope.

At this point, I began to think I’d be lucky just to walk on in college.

Forget a scholarship. Forget playing pro. I had no hope of those dreams.

But then, the summer after my junior year...

something happened that changed everything.

I met a former Major League infielder named Brad Wellman, who worked with me on my defense.

Wellman had a completely different way of understanding defense.

He knew how to teach mechanics and footwork in a way that flowed into any situation,

...rather than turning me into a robot that could only handle one kind of groundball.

Soon after…

Friends and coaches started saying I was fielding like a completely different player.

I went from being really inconsistent (with no idea why mistakes happened or how to fix them) to…

Fielding nearly everything cleanly

Making way more accurate and powerful throws

Handling bad hops with ease

Fielding with rhythm and smoothness that recruiters noticed

Feeling confident and able to recover quickly if I did make a mistake (instead of letting it spiral into a slump)

Now, coaches wanted me in the 9th inning. They trusted my defense.

That trust kept me on the field (getting at-bats), even when my bat was slumping.

I was having more FUN in baseball because I was experiencing less failure and more success.

And when I did make a mistake, it didn’t lead to that old spiral of doubt and fear because now I knew what went wrong—and more importantly, how to fix it.

So, at the end of the day, it wasn't hitting that allowed me to...

Graduate from a D1 University DEBT FREE (while my friends graduated $100,000+ in debt)

Achieve my dreams of playing in the Major Leagues

Play professionally for 16 seasons with 5 organizations (Rockies, Yankees, Pirates, Twins, and Rangers)

NOPE, none of that happened because I was a "good" (not elite) hitter.

This was all because elite defense was the ONE WAY an average guy like me didn't have to STAY average.

5 Reasons Why Most Infield Instruction Leaves Players Frustrated

And the secrets behind instruction that gets results

Reason #1

The cliches don't help much

If you've spent time around a baseball field, you've heard these cliche fielding instructions:

  1. "Charge the baseball"

  2. "Take small steps"

  3. "Have soft hands”

Too often, what's missing is the why, when and HOW of this commonly thrown-around advice.

So, "charge the baseball!" ... sure... with proper footwork, timing, approach angles, a good read on the ball, proper glove arrangement, and setup for the transition with maximum efficiency... I could keep going, but I think you get the point.

There is SO MUCH being left out with overly-simplistic instruction like "charge the ball.”

But the problem is that most self-appointed "gurus" don't really understand these things themselves, so they're not able to explain... let alone teach... these transformative concepts.

Throwing out cliches and HOPING it will help is really only setting infielders up for failure.

Reason #2

Most coaches stop with fielding mechanics... but that's only a small part of the picture

Adjustability, tempo, anticipation, attack angles, reading hops, timing...

These things are the secret sauce of elite infielders.

It's what puts YOU in control - rather than being at the mercy of the baseball.

It's knowing HOW to handle nearly ANY bad hop or late read.

When I FINALLY began to learn about these things, it completely changed my game.

It gave me an incredible amount of confidence to know I could handle whatever came my way... and not just react, but actually plan ahead & control the outcome to be exactly how I wanted it.

That's why it's one of the biggest keys to eliminating errors & becoming more consistent.

If any of those tools are missing, you will be at a disadvantage.

But here's the problem...

99% of coaches teach a mechanical approach to fielding, which either strips players of their athleticism - or leaves them feeling out of control (AKA, the "collision infielder")

Either way, it limits how much success they can have.

Reason #3

Most instructors have never tested what they teach at an elite level

I can't count the number of times I've heard ideas thrown around and taught at youth league levels where I thought...

"That might work now, but it definitely won't work later."

It is unfortunately INCREDIBLY common for players to learn a "correct" way to do something that no longer works a year or two down the road as the speed of the game increases.

In fact, I believe this is the #1 reason young players develop bad habits that hold them back when they get older.

.

There are a lot of amazing coaches and well-meaning parents who simply have never actually fielded a ground ball or line drive coming off of a 95 mph pitch - and then needed to throw out a world class runner at first base.

It's during moments like THAT where bad habits and inefficiencies reveal themselves.

In baseball fielding - even at the youth level - every tenth-of-a-second matters. It's the difference between feeling frantic... or feeling relaxed and confident!

Movements must be quick and efficient WITHOUT being rushed (which causes errors).

And since trying to change bad habits in high school or college or pro ball is NOT an easy thing to do, it's important to learn to do things properly early on.

You can't wait until the speed of the game increases before you decide it's time to make some adjustments.

By then, it could be too late.

Reason #4

Head Knowledge Isn't Enough

Baseball isn't only about head knowledge. Understanding the "why" behind everything you do is a CRITICAL first step, but next part can be even more difficult.

The next step is even more critical... we have to turn that knowledge into something your body and mind can do correctly consistently, even in high pressure situations.

Baseball is a sport of reflexes.

Good instructors know how to take infielders on that journey from JUST understanding correct fundamentals to actually training the body to respond correctly - in split second situations.

Unfortunately, too many well-meaning instructors just don't know how to guide players through that journey.

Reason #5

The Boulder Effect

Errors are confidence crushing... and contagious!

Until players have come to a deep understanding of defensive fundamentals, they're far more likely to become a victim of their own mind.

These lapses in confidence, or gaps in understanding, inevitably lead to:

  • More errors

  • Have a harder time recovering mentally after making an error

  • Have a more difficult time self-correcting when things are feeling "off"

  • Become a victim of those days team morale is low

I know that feeling... being all scrambled up inside after making an error. Knowing that everyone is watching you, and feeling completely alone out there.

Like an island.

Recovering from an error can feel like you're trying to stop a boulder that's already begun to roll down the mountain.

And it's so much worse when you're not sure exactly what happened or how to fix it!

Or even worse... you doubt your ability to make those tough plays!

And sometimes, the constant failure weighs so much that we start lose our love for the game.

At least if I understand what went wrong, my mental dialogue is completely different:

"Let's go Doug. You got this. Do it right next time."

Is a lot better than... "don't hit the ball to me, don't hit the ball to me...!"

That's the difference between a fielder who understands his craft vs one who doesn't.

When all you have to rely on is cliches and instruction that you don't really understand... that soul-crushing feeling after you've made an error can linger for days or even weeks!

So naturally, that leads the next question...

How do you become an Elite Infielder?

This is actually not an easy question for most people to answer.

Recently a coach told me about how his son, who has been playing on elite competitive football teams for several years now, was fortunate enough to have a former NFL player for his coach this year.

After his first practice, his son came home very excited. His words were...

"Dad, I learned more in practice today, in one day, than I did all last season!"

That's the advantage of learning from someone who has tried and tested what really works at an elite level. However, finding a coach like that is easier said than done!

Does any of this sound familiar?

"My kid attends baseball camps"

Anytime you have a group of kids in a setting like that,

the instructor will be forced to cater to the least experienced player.

Sure, YOUR kid is advanced, but the kid next to him? He doesn't know which hand to put his glove on.

With those limitations, even the best pro instructors can usually only share few helpful nuggets with the more advanced kids.

"Well, can't coach teach infield fundamentals?"

If you're lucky enough to have a coach who understands the true Art of Defense (which would make you VERY lucky), just ask and he will tell you...

There's only a very limited amount of team practice time. Meaning, team practice is for team work, & individual skill building should be done on your own time.

"There's tons of free instruction on the internet"

"What about private lessons?"

Most private instructors really only focus on hitting

and they don't understand infield at a level deep enough to teach it properly.

In 30 years of baseball, I've only met a handful of coaches...

....such as Mike Gallego, Walt Weise, Rafael Belliard, Kenny Holmberg

...who were really able to communicate and teach a deep understanding of playing infield.

But, assuming you CAN find a good instructor, at $80 to $100 a pop, private lessons can easily cost thousands $$$$

to learn everything needed to MASTER good infield fundamentals.

What about a comprehensive online program that you can do at your own pace and will lead you step-by-step to the results you want?

l've always loved online courses.

Why?

Because they often represent decades of hard work condensed into a simple, easy to follow step-by-step plan...

...and that's exactly what my new course, The Confident Infielder, is all about.

Life is busy. Making progress takes commitment, but also a realistic, attainable plan for how much time you have.

The Confident Infielder is designed to take only 20 minutes per day.

Each day in the 60 Day Plan contains:

  • One learning video (under 5 minutes long)

Schedule. While the learning is organized into 60 days, they do NOT have to be consecutive days.

Only have a few days after school? That's great. Only have weekends? Not a problem.

The good news is that this program is flexible, work-at-your-own-pace, and easily adapts to YOUR real life schedule.

Routine Fielding

The routine fielding position is one of the most important skills for any infielder to master. If a coach can't trust you on defense, you won't be an infielder for very long.

  • The worst bad habits to avoid like the plague (including harmful myths I hear taught frequently)

  • How to develop your own style... without hurting your game

  • The 9 day plan for mastering your routine fielding position

  • Nomar vs A-Rod style of fielding, which is best?

Footwork

  • How to achieve the footwork that scouts and recruiters drool over

  • Why the common advice "get around the baseball" is wrong, and what you should do instead

  • Why the timing and placement of your right foot may be the most important thing you ever learn about fielding

  • The 7 laws of footwork for maintaining balance and momentum (think smooth, consistent fielding that impresses people and gets more runners out)

  • How your footwork controls if you get a good or bad part of the hop

  • The most difficult aspect of infield to teach made easier with a step-by-step plan you can use again and again. This 10 day Action Plan leads players through a progress, beginning with developing a feel for the proper footwork and then accelerating mastery to game speed.

  • Internal Clock Development

  • And lots more! (I'm being serious. There's a lot to cover in footwork - but don't let it scare you. Each day is bite sized, and the drills make everything become automatic before we add more on top.)

Transition & Throw

The transition from fielding to throwing can either be incredibly awkward or it can be used tremendously to your advantage.

An efficient transition is one of the most important ways you can shave time off your play (get more outs, beat faster runners) and also to position yourself for a more powerful, more accurate throw.

Inside, Doug Bernier will cover...

  • The 3 common mistakes that make the transition awkward, slow, and lead to throwing errors!

  • The exact throwing power position that every elite infielder needs to achieve for maximum arm strength and accuracy

  • Since fielding the baseball is priority #1, it often puts us into a less-than-ideal position to throw out the runner. We're going to talk about the secrets to using the transition to turn an awkward position into a strong one

  • The one simple footwork change that helped me go from an inaccurate thrower to deadly accurate

  • 6 keys to making an accurate throw

  • The 5 different types of throws, (spin throw, regular, jump throw, side arm, long hop), plus when to use them

  • How to setup for the different types of throws

  • The throwing grip that EVERY elite infielder uses and how to get it perfectly nearly every time

Ready Position

  • The common "ready" mistakes that rob you of range (Fixing these can instantly add a full step of range to both sides)

  • The simple exercise I learned from the New York Yankees to show if your infielders are getting ready on time - and convince them you're right!

Range & Adjustability

Range is an important mark of an elite infielder.

Even more importantly, you want to

increase range without losing consistency

It's no help for you or the team if you cover a lot of ground and then end up with an error! That's why, in this module, I'll cover...

  • 5 keys to increasing your infield coverage up to 8 feet (per player)

  • WITHOUT sacrificing consistency

  • How to make fewer errors by increasing "area of routine"

  • The two habits that can increase your range without leaving your house (#2 is definitely a learned skill, and I'm going to break down how to do it).

  • Why the common advice "get around the baseball" is wrong, and what you should do instead

  • Which fielding angles work best to increase range

  • The onfield habits that most elite infielders have in common

  • Advanced tips and situational strategies for increasing range of the entire infield

How to stay sharp after Confident Infielder has ended

I'll help you develop your own 15-20 minute routine, combining drills and ground balls. This routine is specific to you, find what you need to do and prepare properly so you can maintain everything you have leaned to this point.

This routine will also be your “go to” when you are scuffling defensively.

Doing these preferred drills will also help you continue to improve.

I'll also show you...

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't answered, please email [email protected]. We're here to help!

What age is this for?

Confident Infielder is for any age. High school / college is a great time to learn this info, but we've had infielders from 8 to 78 years old thrive in this program

Does it work for both baseball & softball?

Yes, we have many softball players and coaches as members of Confident Infielder.

How much time does it take?

The Confident Infielder is designed to be flexible, so it can work around any busy schedule. Only have weekends? No problem. Missed a week or 2? That's totally ok.

The drill program is organized into 60 days, 20 minutes per day (that includes a short learning video & the drills for the day). But that time frame is flexible. The more you put into this program, the more you'll get out of it.

What if it doesn't work for me?

The Confident Infielder comes with a 60 day "risk free" policy. That's enough time to try the whole program......and if you feel like I misled or let you down at all, just request your refund any time during the first 2 months. However, I believe with all of my heart that if you follow the program, you'll be seeing MASSIVE improvements way before then.

Can my infielder do this program without my help / without a partner?

The answer to that is both yes and no. There is plenty in this program that your infielder can do solo, on their own time, without any help... including the learning videos, and plenty of drills that can be done with a rebounder. HOWEVER, there WILL come a time when full-length ground balls are recommended.

Recommendation - Quality time together is one of the best things about baseball. This program is an excellent way to supercharge the results your infielder is getting from the time you spend together.

Who is the instructor?

Confident Infielder is taught exclusively by former MLB infielder Doug Bernier. Doug Bernier played 15 professional seasons with 5 MLB organizations: MN Twins, NY Yankees, CO Rockes, Pirates & TX Rangers. During his playing career, Doug played every infield position at the Major League level, with the majority of time spent at shortstop, 2nd & 3rd base. Currently, Doug is the CO Rockies' Field Coordinator and Infield Coordinator. As Infield Coordinator, Doug Bernier oversees player development across all minor league affiliates, ensuring consistent training and coaching strategies as the Field Coordinator. In addition to this role, he has retained his position as Infield Coordinator, reflecting his deep passion and expertise in infield defense. Following the lead of his mentor, Kenny Holmberg of the Texas Rangers, Doug continues to focus on honing defensive skills, with spring training being his busiest and most impactful period.

What if I have questions?

Included with your Confident Infielder Membership is access to email support to directly ask Doug any course-related questions.

TIME SENSITIVE - For the first time ever, Doug is doing a live release of the newest version of Confident Infielder. That means you can go through the program with Doug and the entire Inner Circle community! Starts Dec 5, 2024, so don't wait!

What People Are Saying About

Confident Infielder

"Everything up until this program was me colliding with the ball as an infielder.

Now I’m able to use the proper footwork, employ a solid, professional attack on the ball, field the ball cleanly and confidently and deliver for the out. Mental confidence!"

- James

Adult League Player

"I played for two hall of fame college coaches and I have to say this is by far the best infield instruction I have ever received."

- Keven Thornhill, Camp Verde, AZ

High School Coach

"I am a high school coach. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate my infielders at about a three before starting the course. After two months doing the program, I would conservatively rate them at a seven.

The confidence this course has brought them is making their time on the field much more enjoyable for them and they are much more focused on improving than they were before.

I fully believe that this Confident Infielder course is going to be the difference in some players getting an opportunity to play at the college level.

- Gus, Parent of Infielder

"Just WOW.... my son Noah is much quicker to those grounders coming at him.

He has not missed one since we began practicing what you taught!”

- Gus, Parent of Infielder

"I thought I knew infield fundamentals, but your program made everything fall into place. And Doug was so quick to respond and so helpful any time I had a question. Fantastic in all respects!"

- Rick Tuyn

Florida, Coach & Grandfather

"I played for two hall of fame college coaches and I have to say this is by far the best infield instruction I have ever received."

- Keven Thornhill, Camp Verde, AZ

High School Coach

I can't believe how much there is to know about infield that I had no idea about. I always want to be there to help my son, but having Doug's knowledge and a plan to follow has been a game changer! My son's fielding has changed by leaps and bounds. Needless to say, his coach is thrilled, and so is Gabe.

- Jose Garcia, Boca Raton, FL

I'm almost in tears writing this. I'm so thankful for Confident Infielder. My son loves infield, so he was devastated last year when his coach put him in the outfield. I didn't know how to help him, until we heard Doug's story. After that, he decided to work on fielding on his own time. We signed him up for Confident Infielder, and he stuck with it to the end. This year, he tried out again and is now starting at 3rd base! Best life lesson ever - Hard work pays off!

- Joselyn Acker, Temecula, CA

"The Confident Infielder is by far the best infield program I've seen!"

Just 2 weeks ago, Jay was late and jerky on everything, and was lucky to meet the ball at the spot and certainly wasn’t beating it to the spot at all. We have worked a pile to clean up his feet and become more efficient with his steps and have spent a pile of time with his glove.

Now, the change is noticeable to everyone, and Jay is beyond thrilled!

A Message From The INSTRUCTOR - Doug Bernier

"Inside The Confident Infielder, I've condensed more than 3 decades of learning from the best infielders & coaches ever to play the game with my own experience into easy-to-follow, 60 day program.

If you were to find a former Major League to be a private instructor (which is not so easy), I've estimated it would take AT LEAST 15 to 20 private lessons with a player to teach them everything in this course. The going rate for instructors of that experience level where I live is $125 per hour.

$125 per lesson x 20 lessons = $2,500.

So a parent could easily spend $2,500 on a kid learning this info, and even so, he wouldn't have the benefit of being able to go back and review or refresh what he learned!

$2,500?!????

To me, that is unacceptable.

Learning elite defense changed my life, so I want to make sure it's not only "the lucky few" who have access to this information.

That's why I've spent months - many, many long days -working to make that goal a reality through The Confident Infielder program."

Now you have access to the same results, at what is essentially of just 4 private lessons. And not only that, but you can refer back to it again and again for years,

...or use it with multiple infielders.

Most of all, I want you to know that I'm here for you during this journey to mastering elite fielding fundamentals. In 60 days from right now, I think you'll be shocked at how far we've come.

Let's do this together.

Sincerely,

Doug Bernier
